Another one I could happily hang onto this guitar myself....I think it looks stunning! Perhaps that is why I have been rather slow in getting around to completing the overhaul/re-string I have now completed in the workshop!

Over the years I have sold many examples of the of the 1977 to 1981 produced FG Series Open or Slotted Headstock 12-strings, whether it be the FG-312, FG-412SB or FG-512....invariably have played beautifully & sound magnificent....the guitar equivalent of a full orchestra. They are all similar construction, except the FG-512 is Rosewood back & sides, rather than Mahogany, and the Fg-412SB stands out as the bobby-dazzler of the 3, with the iconic "Cherryburst", rather than natural finish!
Description
Stock Number: VTG1438.

Not all digits of the Serial Number are fully clear to read, but starting 80******** very clearly, coupled with the known production period of these guitars from 1977 to 1981, positively dates the guitar to 1980.

I assume that the guitar has been played in the past with a soundhole pickup, as it came with a jack socket in the side of the lower bout, and a lead inside with mini-jack, but no remaining pickup.....I have fitted an (unused) Artec WSH (Wooden Soundhole Pickup) I have had in stock for a while, as per the revised photos 1 & 2...a Bubinga hardwood-covered unit, supplied with & fitted with pre-wired Nickel-plated column jack and 60cm. cable.......Link to Artec website details below.
Condition
For a 38 year old guitar, it is in remarkably clean condition....really no significant marks on it! On arrival it played well as it was, with good action.

Nevertheless, the overhaul I had in mind was going to include dressing the fingerboard, stoning & re-profiling the frets, but on further inspection I was not happy with the rather low height of the original frets. I have removed them and installed new frets, after a gentle re-leveling of the very nice Rosewood fingerboard, maintaining the 16" radius. I have also dressed, re-profiled & reduced the height of the bridge a little, not to reduce the string action height as there is no need to do so, but rather to improve the break angle of the strings over the saddle, increasing downward pressure & improving sound transmission prior to re-stringing & set-up adjustments.
Action, strings & cases
Good 12th. fret action of around 2.5mm./3mm. has been maintained after re-levelling & re-fretting fingerboard, bridge dressing & set-up adjustments. Re-strung with Martin Bronze XL 10-46 strings, tuned down two steps to "D" (capo at 2nd. fret for "E")....if you wish to fit heavier set, would only be suitable for lowered tunings.

There is no case with the guitar, but I have available a Hiscox Liteflite case, which fits perfectly, and is available at a modest additional price.

There are many and various YouTube demo clips of vintage Yamaha 12-strings, but so far the embedded clip below, entitled "MY BLOODY THUMB. (original ) on a Yamaha FG-412SB" by "jamtown63" is the only one I've found for the same model.....you can't see it too well, but you can hear it!
