Condition
All guitars are prepared to the same high standards as the scores of other vintage and modern guitars, which I have restored and/or sold over the years.

The concentration is on structural soundness and playability, rather than cosmetic touching-up, although when the need for some finish reinstatement is unavoidable I do have the best possible aid from Colin Keefe, who is expert at making good finish on vintage guitars, without it being obvious, but of course the guitars are sympathetically cleaned, setup and re-strung, as part restoration.

For availability and individual details on the various guitars, and the restoration work being done on them, please do contact me by email or telephone.
Action, strings & cases
All guitars are set-up to be correctly playable. I set out to achieve a 12th. fret action and overall set-up appropriate to the type of guitar....not necessarily ultra-low, but correct for the type of guitar. Particularly on Vintage & Classical guitars the action heights may sound high to younger players, who have learned to play electric guitars only...please bear in mind that we are in a totally different world of guitar-playing here, to which we cannot apply the "all my guitars have an action of less than 2mm." approach. Many players have particular requirements for their playing styles or restrictions to their playing, and I'm always happy to advise on the possibilities & options.

I often fit as standard Martin Bronze Light 12-54 steel strings on Blues Parlors, Flattops & Archtops, Martin Light or Ultra-Light 12 Strings & La Bella USA strings on Classicals, but have used a variety strings, including of Eagle Music Puretone Tenor sets dedicated for Standard, Irish & Chicago tenor tunings, Newtone Michael Messer National Resonator, Jon Gomm Baritone, Heritage Series, Master Class & Archtop Acoustic Strings & Electric Masters, John Pearse Baritone & Tenor Strings, Clifford Essex Tenor Strings, Martin Silk & Steel & Retro Monel Nickel Strings, plus Fender & GHS Electric Strings, amongst others.

The guitars usually do not come with cases, although some may have older type but sturdy cases. Alternatively, I may be able to offer a suitable size Hiscox Liteflite hardshell case, offering infinitely better protection. Additional case prices available on request.

**** YOUTUBE ****
------------------------------------------------------------

Some buyers have made YouTube clips of gigs/sessions on the guitars they have bought from VTG, and I have embedded one of these as the YouTube Video below... The Hot House Four - "Clockwatching", July 2014, The Devon Arms, Torquay, showing Lola's solo on the 1946 Harmony Monterey H1456 with "Wartime" wooden tailpiece, she bought from VTG shortly before that gig, and by then with added pickup.

Then there is Useful Link #1 below....David Bristow playing the same model Stella H929TG tenor guitar I restored for him...."Three Tat Ladies" at the Musician, Leicester.

....plus, T-Bone Burnett, his mid-'50s Kay Thin Twin, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss....does it get any better?

**** PICKUPS ****
------------------------------------------------------------

There is nothing to fully compare with the sound of a good acoustic guitar via a good quality microphone through a good PA/Acoustic Amp......but, it isn't always easy to get that....so, the industry has spent the last few decades trying to find the best way of amplifying acoustic guitars!

Acoustic Flattop:

Soundhole pickups, undersaddle/piezo pickups, internal microphones, etc., etc., but we think that the best we have heard, so far, is the fairly recently introduced L.R.Baggs Lyric Acoustic Guitar Microphone with TRU-MIC noise canceling technology, No pickup, Analog signal conditioning, All discrete mic preamplifier, Soundhole volume control & Microphone presence control.

Professionally installed this system can be fitted to any flattop guitar with a bridge plate. Not cheap, but if you want true acoustic sound amplified, without feedback problems, then this is the best we know. We can supply and fit it to any guitar of suitable type for the usual retail list price of £229.00, without any additional charge for the fitting installation work.

Acoustic Archtop:

Certain pickups can be built into floating bridges, but generally bridge pickup options for archtops are limited. However, there are options for various pickguard or fingerboard end mounted floating pickups. Indeed, I have recently fitted a pickguard-mounted humbucker, specially designed and made by Aaron Armstrong at Armstrong Pickups for a Harmony Tenor Archtop, and I am about to fit another one commissioned from Aaron, for a 6-string Harmony Hollywood, this time, configured to sound like the DeArmond Goldfoil pickup, originally fitted to the guitar. Body mounted pickups may be less prone to feedback problems, but will involve permanent alterations to the vintage guitar's body, which generally I like to avoid.
