Brief details of previously sold Harmony USA made acoustic parlor guitars - see "VTG AVAILABLE" listings, in the Chicago/USA Blues Guitars section, for similar available guitars or contact me.
I have sold many 1950s, 1960s & early'70s Harmony made Stellas over the years, which come in various styles and brandings, all based on the classic Stella H929 Sunburst Faux-flame finish model continuously produced for a quarter of a century from 1945 to 1970. They have great looks, lots of vibe and historic all-American character - superb sounding Chicago made parlor blues guitars, set-up for finger-style or bottleneck playing.

I usually try to sell them in all-original condition - an iconic 12 fret-to-the-body parlor Blues Guitar - all solid Birch, ladder braced construction. Sometimes these guitars are mistakenly described as three-quarter size - there is in fact a 3/4 size version, an example of which I have available for restoration. The true 3/4, which I also sell, whenever I can get them, is much smaller, this being the full-size model with standard Stella dimensions of overall length - 36.25"/96cm., body width lower bout - 13.25"/33.5cm., upper bout - 9.5"/24.2cm., body length - 17.8"/45.2cm., body depth front - 3.25"/8.2cm., rear - 3.7"/9.3cm., with standard Stella/Harmony nut width of 1.75"/44.5mm. - just a tad wider than most modern acoustics - and a 24.25"/615mm. scale.

The Harmony ink date stamp usually indicates the production run date, but sometimes is not visible inside, which is not that unusual, as on occasion they were not that clear to start with, or have faded over time, but I can usually estimate the approx. year.

If you are an acoustic blues player and wonder why that top line guitar you bought doesn't sound authentic when you play blues like those of Blind Blake, Blind Willie McTell, or Blind Lemon Jefferson, I can tell you why it doesn't and never will! All of those guys and many others from the 30s through to the 60s played Birch bodied guitars, some of them with Spruce tops, some all Birch, but it is the Birch which gives that unmistakable sound. No guitar made today, American or otherwise can give you that sound, for Delta and Country Blues!

If you want a fully functioning, great sounding piece of American musical history, this is it - really exceptional addition to any collection of Blues/Vintage Guitars.
Here are some, not all, of the Harmony made Parlor Guitars I have sold in recent times - in some cases other examples of the same models may be currently available, or at least "in the workshop". Please enquire for current availability, prices and further details.

*** SOLD *** HARMONY STELLA H929 USA VINTAGE 1960s LADDER BRACED ALL SOLID BIRCH ACOUSTIC BLUES PARLOR GUITAR - Really Excellent Cosmetic Condition, Prof. Overhauled, Low Action, Great Blues Tone & Volume! Restoration completed having been reserved on "pre-order" for a customer from Lancashire - Buyer collected - after playing for a good time & very happy with it! - VTG1550 -

All guitars are restored to the same high standards as the scores of other Stellas and branded versions of the Stella design produced by Harmony throughout their long ownership of the Stella name from around 1940, up to the termination of USA production in Chicago in 1975, which I have restored and sold over the years.

The concentration is on structural soundness and playability, rather than any cosmetic touching-up, and certainly no ill-advised refinishing, but of course the guitars are sympathetically cleaned, setup and re-strung, as part restoration.

For availability and individual details on the various guitars, and the restoration work being done on them, please do contact me by email or telephone.
Action, strings & cases
I set out to achieve a 12th. fret action of 3mm./3.5mm. on Stellas...sometimes it is a little lower, but if that sounds high to you, please bear in mind that we are in a totally different world of guitar-playing here, to which we cannot apply the "all my guitars have an action of less than 2mm." approach. These are blues guitars...as mentioned above they are the 4/4 full size version, not 3/4s, and as such it is expected that players will use a bottleneck slide, in which case a low/electric type action just does not work...added to which the shorter 24.25" scale means lower string tension and easier fretting.

I fit Martin Bronze Light 12-54 gauge strings as standard, but happy to discuss other string types/gauges to buyer's requirements.

The guitars do not usually come with cases, although I do have some of the original covered pressed-board cases originally supplied with these guitars....those who remember these will recall that they are not exactly what we would now call a fitted case! Alternatively, on occasion I can get a small classical size Hiscox Liteflite hardshell case, offering infinitely better protection, but these do have to be specially fitted out. Additional case prices available on request.

**** YOUTUBE ****

I have embedded a Youtube clip, by "wsbluesbox" of a 1964 Stella H929, to demonstrate the tailpiece/floating bridge models.

I have also included as the "Useful Link" #1 another YouTube clip, this time a fixed bridge model, the Silvertone H604 by "62dan57".

Useful Link #2 is again the H604, by "keonling", showing what you can get with a soundhole pickup in one of these - I'm certainly not suggesting that you go drilling holes in it, but I like the sound and playing, so wanted to share it with you.
